FROM SERBIA TO PARIS: THE FUTURE FORMS OF FASHION

Serbia Fashion Week brings Future Forms to Paris — where fashion, art, design and cultural identity meet beyond the runway

Fashion does not always need a runway to make a statement. Sometimes, it needs a room. During Paris Fashion Week, the Centre culturel de Serbie in Paris becomes the setting for FUTURE FORMS, an exhibition presented by Serbia Fashion Week and dedicated to contemporary expressions of fashion, art and design. From 3 to 16 October 2026, eight creative signatures from Serbia and the wider region come together in Paris in an exhibition presented in connection with Paris Fashion Week, within the Welcome to Paris programme of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, placing these creative practices within one of fashion’s most internationally visible environments.

But Future Forms is not simply another fashion event taking place during fashion week. Its premise is much more interesting, as it asks what fashion can become when it moves beyond the conventional boundaries of the garment.

FORM IS THE STARTING POINT

The exhibition brings together works that explore volume, materials, silhouettes and the borders between fashion and other creative disciplines. This is significant because fashion increasingly exists somewhere between categories: a garment can become sculpture, a silhouette can become architecture, a textile can carry memory, a constructed surface can become an image, a body can become the space where all these things meet. This polymorphy embraces such complexity and beauty.

To this end, Future Forms approaches fashion through this expanded understanding of form,  not only as something to be worn, but as something capable of communicating an idea. The result is an exhibition that places fashion in conversation with contemporary art and design rather than treating it as an isolated commercial category.

EIGHT CREATIVE VOICES, ONE EXHIBITION

The strength of Future Forms also lies in its plurality. Rather than presenting one uniform aesthetic, the exhibition brings together different creative approaches under one conceptual framework, through different visual languages, different relationships with the body, material and construction. Together, they form something more interesting than a single fashion statement: a conversation. And that conversation is taking place in Paris.

 WHY PARIS STILL MATTERS

There is an unavoidable symbolism in presenting Future Forms during Paris Fashion Week. Paris remains one of fashion’s most powerful stages of visibility, but its significance today does not have to be understood as a hierarchy in which creativity begins in Paris and travels outward.

It can work in the opposite direction. A city can become a meeting point. A platform can become an amplifier. An exhibition can bring another fashion geography into view. This is what makes Future Forms particularly relevant.

Serbia Fashion Week is not simply placing Serbian and regional designers inside Paris. It is bringing another creative perspective into the conversation taking place around Paris Fashion Week. And that distinction matters.

FROM A REGIONAL SCENE TO AN INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE

Serbia Fashion Week has long positioned itself as an international platform for Serbian fashion, with an emphasis on connecting designers and creative industries to wider professional networks. Future Forms extends that role.

The exhibition gives designers an opportunity to be encountered outside their immediate geographical context and within a city where fashion attracts an exceptionally international audience.  That kind of encounter is important, because international visibility rarely begins with a global campaign. Sometimes it begins with one person entering an exhibition, one journalist noticing a name, one curator encountering an unfamiliar practice, one designer making a connection, one image travelling further than expected. Fashion’s international system is built through these encounters.

THE VALUE OF BEING SEEN — WITHOUT LOSING WHERE YOU COME FROM

There is another dimension to Future Forms that deserves attention. International visibility can sometimes come with a pressure to translate oneself into the language of the dominant fashion capitals. To become more “international”, more recognizable, or to fit an already established visual vocabulary. However, I believe that the more valuable form of international presence may be different. It may be the ability to arrive somewhere new without leaving the specificity of your own creative language behind. This is where regional fashion weeks have an important role to play.

THE FUTURE DOES NOT BELONG TO ONE CITY

The title Future Forms suggests movement. Not a prediction of what fashion will look like, but an invitation to imagine the forms it might take. And that’s exactly where fashion needs to look now. Not only toward the established capitals, but toward the places where different relationships between culture, identity, craft, technology and design are already being developed.

The future of fashion will not necessarily arrive from one city. It will emerge through encounters between many. Paris remains important. But Paris does not have to be the origin of every conversation. Sometimes, it can simply be the place where another conversation becomes visible.

The future does not always announce itself on a runway. Sometimes, it takes forms.
